Can the official WhatsApp API read group details?
The short answer
No. The official API cannot see a group at all.

Meta's official WhatsApp Cloud API is built for business messaging: templates, customer-service windows and per-conversation pricing. A large part of what WhatsApp itself can do — groups, channels, status, presence, contact lookups — has no endpoint there at all, which is why so many teams end up looking past it. Everything below is checked against Meta's own published reference, with the link and the date we checked it.

Why there is no endpoint for it
There is no group object in Meta's Cloud API, so nothing to list, read or rename. A business on the official platform cannot even enumerate the groups its number belongs to, because from the platform's point of view the number does not belong to any.
The official workaround, and what it costs
None. The information exists only on the phone, so any directory of groups a business keeps has to be typed in and kept current by a person.

You need a verified business identity
The official platform is the only route to an Official Business Account: the verified name customers see in place of a phone number, and the badge beside it. A linked number can carry a WhatsApp Business profile, but Meta will never badge it, and no provider can get you one.
You are sending marketing at scale to people who never wrote to you
That is what approved templates are for. Meta charges per message for them and treats the volume as legitimate; the same volume from a linked number is the clearest automation signal there is, and it is how numbers get banned. If outbound campaigns are the whole product, the official platform is the cheaper mistake.
You need Meta's own support and an SLA
A Business Solution Provider gives you a contract, an escalation path and a human to call when delivery stops. Wapito will tell you the moment WhatsApp restricts your number and what it did; nobody outside Meta can make it undo that, and we do not pretend otherwise.
Frequently asked questions
Why is a group missing from the list?
Either the linked number is not in it, or the session has not finished syncing. A newly paired number receives its groups over a short period rather than instantly, so a directory built in the first minutes after pairing will be incomplete. Re-read it once the session reports itself healthy.
Can I read a group my number is not in?
Only its public metadata, and only if you hold an invite code for it - resolving a code returns the name, size and owner without joining. Beyond that, a group is invisible to a number that is not a member, which is a deliberate part of how WhatsApp works.
Does the group object include every participant?
It includes the participant roll with each member's role, which is what most automations need. For very large groups, prefer the dedicated participants endpoint so you can page through the membership instead of pulling one enormous object on every read.
